Stapleton steers clear at SA Mid-Am Champs

ShaunStapleton_GNGUTSHWANE, 5 May 2016 – It’s moving day at the SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship and Shaun Stapleton will have his job cut out to stave off an assault from defending champion Gerlou Roux and Ryan Dreyer at Silver Lakes Country Club.

Stapleton began Wednesday’s second round in a three-way tie for the lead on four under with Roux from Bellville Golf Club and Akasia’s Robert Gouws.

The software designer from Wanderers Golf Club mixed bogeys at four and 17 with birdies at seven, eight and 10 for a one-under-par 71 that will see Stapleton start the third round with a two shot advantage on five under 139.

Roux kept pace with Stapleton, but the country’s number one ranked player spoiled a solid round with a bogey-bogey finish to drop two shots off the pace with a 73.

Former Sanlam SA Amateur champion Dreyer notched birdies at two, seven and 15 to offset a lone drop at 13 for a two under 70 and a share of second on 141.

Elton James from Westlake followed an opening 69 with a 73 to finish three shots behind Stapleton, while Gouws dropped to fifth after posting a 75.
