Son seals top 20 in Germany

DanielleDuToit_WooJuSon_GNGU7 August 2015 – South Africa’s Woo-Ju Son closed out a top 20 finish in the RB German Junior while compatriot Altin van der Merwe finished second in the Boys Division of the Global Junior Golf Tour event in Germany on Thursday.

Son carded rounds of 74, 82 and 82 at Golf Club Heidelberg to tie for 18th on 238.

The 14-year-old from Eagle Canyon finished one stroke ahead of Namibia’s Caro Els, while Gauteng North golfer Danielle du Toit followed two 85s with a final round 80 to finish joint 38th.

Local favourite Natalie Wagner won the Girls Division by four strokes from fellow German Anna-Marie Diederichs. Wagner carded rounds of 79, 69 and 73 to win on five over 223.

Meanwhile Van der Merwe opened with a 77 but two subsequent rounds of 70 lifted the Durbanville golfer to second in the final standings.

“Woo-Ju and Danielle were very disappointed with their performances and felt that they never played to their true potential,” said Womens Golf South Africa vice-president Sally Greasley.

“Both girls drove the ball well, but they struggled with their short games and never came to grips with the greens.

“I believe they both gained a lot from this experience. It’s always tough to play abroad and they were definitely outside their comfort zone this week. They can take a lot from this event and they have a clear idea of what aspects of their games needs more work.

“I have to compliment them on their positive attitude throughout the week. They were wonderful ambassadors for South Africa.”
