SA off to solid start at All-Africa Junior

IMG-20150505-WA0002_GNGUSouth Africa combined for a one-under-par 218 in the first round of the All-Africa Junior Golf Championships to start their title 17th consecutive title chase on solid footing at Lusaka Golf Club on Tuesday.

Marco Steyn from Central Gauteng led the South African attack against Uganda, Zimbabwe and the host nation and carded a one-under-par 72.

The young gun was two over when he holed a long putt for par at the eight, and making the save gave his round some momentum.

Slabbert takes control in SA Disabled Golf Open

DanielSlabbert_Kim WilliamsGNGUTSHWANE, 5 May 2015 – Three-time winner Daniel Slabbert took over the lead in the Nedbank South African Disabled Golf Open at Zwartkop Country Club and immediately paid tribute to his caddie, Sunshine Ladies Tour player Kim Williams, for the great help she has been giving him.

“Kim’s been amazing,” said the leg amputee after signing for a two-over-par 73.

Slabbert tops the leaderboard at 148, with big-hitting “one-armed-bandit” Reinard Schuhknecht second after carding a 74 and defending champion Josh Williams from Canada a further two shots adrift on 151.

“It’s all about the game plan and course management when you’ve got someone as professional as Kim caddying for you,” Slabbert said. Continue reading

Nel defeats Gauche for WP Amateur glory

2-15WPAmateur_AndreNel_GNGUCAPE TOWN, 25 April 2015 – Unheralded Andre Nel capped his giant-killing run with victory in the Western Province Amateur Championship at Rondebosch Golf Club on Saturday when he defeated South Africa’s number two ranked Teaghan Gauche from Gauteng North 3 & 2 for victory.

The 19-year-old KeNako Academy student was 2-down after a bogey-bogey start, but tamed his nerves with a birdie at third hole and squared the match with another gain at the seventh. He assumed control of the match with a third birdie at the eighth and kept a firm grip on the lead to turn 1-up going down the last 18 holes. Continue reading

GN players gun for Western Province Amateur glory

SANLAM AMATURE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPSCAPE TOWN, 23 April 2015 – Wingate Park’s Teaghan Gauche will lead a trio of Gauteng North golfers into battle in the first round of the Western Province Amateur Championship at Rondebosch Golf Club on Thursday.

The country’s number two ranked amateur fired rounds of 75-72-67 and 73 to take sole second behind Stroke Play champion Tristen Strydom, while Philip Kruse from Woodhill and Centurion duo  Nicholas Frade and Divan Marais also made the 32-man field for the Match Play Division.

Gauteng North is guaranteed at least one Gauteng North golfer in the second round draw as Gauche and Marais will face off in round one after the Centurion golfer survived the play-off on 13-over-par 301.

Frade carded rounds of 71-76-74 and 77 to tie for 20th on 10 over 298 and Kruse finished a further stroke adrift after reeling in three successive rounds of 74 and a final round 77.

While Frade faces off with Louis Taylor from Central Gauteng, Kruse will have his job cut out when he goes head-to-head with defending champion Gerlou Roux from Western Province.

Double Delight for Province at Indwe Senior IPT

2015ISASIPT_A-SectionSeniors_SS_GNGUBENONI, 17 April 2015 – The Western Province Seniors and Super Seniors celebrated a superb double victory as both teams successfully defended their A-Section titles for a second successive year in the INDWE SA Senior Amateur Inter-Provincial in Benoni.

Peter van Coller, Japie Koopman, Andrew Cleophas, Tony Bailey, Brian Mampies, Francois le Roux, Dirk van der Merwe and Craig Poulton combined for a superb final round at Ebotse Links Golf Club on Friday to seal the Senior team’s fourth victory in five years.

Super Senior stalwarts Ivan Palframan and Herman September partnered Mark Hair and rookie Tim Hewan to claim an unprecedented fifth consecutive victory in the 27th edition of the country’s largest senior team championship. Continue reading
