Smith sets the SA pace at Notts

JasonSmith1_GNGUNOTTINGHAM, England (25 June 2015) – Austrian Lukas Lipold and Englishmen Ben Taylor and Jordan Wrisdale finished in a three-way tie for the first round lead, while Jason Smith leads the five-man South African delegation in the Brabazon Trophy at Notts Golf Club in Hollinwell, England.

The trio set the clubhouse target at a three-under-par 69 on a breezy day in Nothingham.

On a sunny, but breezy day, 25 players managed to come home in par or better and the leaderboard has a distinctively international flavour with seven countries represented in the top 20.

Smith shot a 73 to finish well within striking distance of the three-way tie at the top.

The Irene golfer offset bogeys at two, five, 11 and 13 with birdies at three, six and 16 to tie for 28th at one under. Continue reading

Scratch League warming up cold winter days

The 2015 edition of Scratch League is nearing its conclusion. Silver Lakes Country Club will host the final round of the Scratch League on Sunday 28 June.

The Scratch League is divided into two divisions, but both divisions compete at the same venue. Leading the A division is Wingate Park CC with Zwartkop CC hot on their heels. Wingate will face a stern test of resolve in facing Irene CC and defending champions Akasia CC in the final this Sunday. Continue reading

Senior Scratch League winners crowned

20150623_094911Zwartkop Country Club has won the 2015 edition of the Senior Scratch league. The resounding win saw the Zwartkop team end 5 points clear of the runners-up Akasia CC and Wingate Park CC who accumulated 16 points in total each.

The probable key to the win was that the four players, who started the league, played all four matches without fail. Zwartkop was the only team to achieve this feat this year. That and the fact that all four players are well versed current provincial players for the union create a formidable team. Continue reading

SA juniors wrap up Junior World Cup campaign

Rnd4_MarcoHerman_Keegan_GNGUAICHI-PREFECTURE, Japan (19 June 2015) – Japan scored a clean sweep in the world’s premier junior golf international team championship at Chukyo Golf Club, while all three African teams rallied in the final round of the 23rd Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Aichi-Prefecture, Japan on Friday.

The Japanese Boys team fired a tournament-best 13-under-par 200 at the Ishino Course to claim the Boys’ Division title by four strokes from Sweden on a winning total of 25-under-par 827.

South Arica carded rounds of 210, 217, 211 and 213 to place eighth on one-under-par 851. Continue reading

Steyn and Carlsson rally at Junior World Cup

End of the road for SA at Amateur Championship

2015 Leopard TrophyANGUS, Scotland (17 June 2015) – Scotsman Craig Howie and Ryan Chisnall from New Zealand led the Stroke Play qualifier of the 120th Amateur Championship, but the world-famous Carnoustie layout proved just too brutal for the eight-man South African contingent in Scotland.

Howie and Chisnall, who shared the top spot on seven-under-par 135, qualified for the match play championship over the next four days at Carnoustie, however, the South Africans were sent packing after the cut to the top 64 and ties was set at one-over-par 143.

Gauteng North’s Hendrikus Stoop was the top performer among the five players who traversed the testing layout of Carnoustie in the second round, while Ian Snyman from Western Province led the South African challenge at Panmure in round two. Continue reading
