Du Toit takes top 7 as Telfer wins Sanlam SA Women’s Stroke Play

Kaleigh Telfer_GNGUCAPE TOWN (26 April 2016) – Johannesburg’s Kaleigh Telfer claimed her maiden Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship title when she won by six strokes at Westlake Golf Club on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old Telfer closed with a tournament low of three-under-par 69 to win on one over par. Eleonora Galletti and Switzerland’s Azelia Meichtry shared second place on seven over par.

Gauteng North’s Danielle du Toit closed with a 77 to finish alone in seventh on 228.

“I’m a little bit speechless. I’ve been working towards this for a very long time so I’m just glad it came when it did,” said Telfer. Continue reading

Du Toit stays in touch at Sanlam SA Women’s Stroke Play

DanielleCAPE TOWN (25 April 2016) – Danielle du Toit from Gauteng North stayed in touch with 36-hole leader Kaleigh Telfer in the Sanlam SA Women’s Stroke Play Championship on Tuesday. Du Toit carded a 76 to finish three off the pace from 17-year-old  Telfer is round two at  Westlake Golf Club.

“I am feeling a bit more comfortable on the course,” said Telfer after signing for a second successive 74 to lead at four over 148. “If I just hit greens on the final day it will be much better because it’s tough to chip around the greens.

Brittney-Fay Berger and Switzerland’s Azelia Meichtry are her nearest challengers on six over par following respective rounds of 72 and 75, while Du Toit shares fourth with Woo-Ju Son and Zethu Myeki. Continue reading

Du Toit one off pace at Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur

DanielleDuToit_GNGUCAPE TOWN (24 April 2016) – Free Stater Chante van Zyl has had to make do with the forced closure of nine of the 18 holes at her home course and very little in the way of quality greens or even a practice bunker to prepare for this week’s Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship. But she was still able to share the lead in Sunday’s first round at Westlake Golf Club.
Van Zyl opened with a round of two-over-par 74 to lead with Kaleigh Telfer, one stroke clear of Kajal Mistry, Danielle du Toit and Azelia Meichtry.

Venter eyes Western Province double

2016WPSP_AlbertVenter_GNGUCAPE TOWN, 21 April 2016 – Pretoria amateur Albert Venter will be looking to emulate former top ranked SA amateur Christiaan Bezuidenhout when he starts his quest for the Western Province Amateur Championship double today.

Bezuidenhout was the last player to win both the stroke play and match play divisions in 2013 and Venter is halfway to the elusive double after claiming a wire-to-wire victory in Stroke Play Championship at Clovelly Country Club on Wednesday. The 20-year-old Centurion golfer edged out former professional Danie van Niekerk from North West at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off to get the job done. Continue reading

SA teams announced for Junior World Cup

TeamSA_cropJOHANNESBURG, 20 April 2016 – The South African Golf Association (SAGA) and Womens Golf South Africa (WGSA) has named two teams to represent South Africa in the 24th edition of the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Aichi-Prefecture, Japan this June.

South Africa’s top ranked Marco Steyn will spearhead the local challenge in the Boys Competition while number one ranked Ivanna Samu will lead South Africa in the Girls Competition at the Ishino Course of the Chukyo Golf Club from 14-17 June.

Steyn and Samu were both members of the two SA teams that competed in the prestigious international event last year. They return for duty alongside Dylan Naidoo, Herman Loubser and Kaleigh Telfer. Continue reading

Venter keeps command at Clovelly

AlbertVenter1_GNGUCAPE TOWN, 20 April 2016 – Centurion amateur Albert Venter kept pedal to the metal and extended his overnight lead in the Western Province Stroke Play Championship at Clovelly Country Club on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old made the most of the wind-still conditions on Monday to open with a nine-under-par 63, but had a tougher time of it as a 35 km per hour South-Westerly wind showed up in the second round.

He offset two bogeys with five birdies for a three under 69 to keep control at 12-under-par 132 and move another step closer to a second victory this season. Continue reading

Venter on fire at WP Stroke Play

2016AASP_AlbertVenter_GNGUCAPE TOWN, 19 April 2016 – Gauteng North’s Albert Venter took advantage of tranquil conditions in the first round of the Western Province Stroke Play to race to a two shot lead at Clovelly Country Club in the Silvermine Valley close to Fish Hoek on Monday.
