Nienaber coasts to SA Boys U-17 triumph

2016NSABU-17_WilcoNienaber_GNGUGEORGE, 7 July 2016 – Free State junior Wilco Nienaber sealed his first victory this season with a commanding wire-to-wire performance in the Nomads SA Boys Under-17 Championship in George on Thursday.

Nienaber opened with a three-under-par 69 at Kingswood Golf Estate and carried a one shot lead into the second round. The 16-year-old Bloemfontein golfer showed the nerves and composure of a true champion as he battled the unbearably cold and windy conditions for a 71 that kept his overnight advantage secure.

Du Toit seals Liberty GNGU Match Play victory

Danielle du ToitTSHWANE, 6 July 2016 – Coming off a six-stroke victory in last week’s Nomads SA Girls Championship, Gauteng North’s Danielle du Toit reeled in a second title in less than two weeks when she claimedt the Liberty Gauteng North Match Play Championship on Wednesday.

Du Toit emerged victorious after a ding-dong battle with Cara Gorlei from Western Province. The Pretoria Country Club player birdied the last two holes to defeat Gorlei 1-Up at Woodhill Golf Estate.

Nienaber keeps command at Kingswood

Wilco Nienaber_CropGEORGE, 6 July 2016 – Mother Nature made life tough for the juniors competing in the Nomads SA Boys U-17 Championship in George, but Free State golfer Wilco Nienaber hung tough to preserve his overnight lead in Tuesday’s second round at Kingswood Golf Estate.

The 16-year-old Bloemfontein golfer followed an opening 69 with a 71 to finish one shot clear of Daniel Cronje from Boland at four-under-par 140. Continue reading

North VS South for Liberty Gauteng North Match Play honours

collage TSHWANE, 6 July 2016 – The title fight for the Liberty Gauteng North Match Play Championship will be contested between local favourite Danielle du Toit and Western Province’s Cara Gorlei.

Recent Nomads SA Girls champion Du Toit defeated Bianca Wernich from the Free State 4 & 2 to reach the final, while Arkansas University student Gorlei downed Casandra Hall from Ekurhuleni 4 & 3 in the second semi-final.

The final round clash starts at 12h18.

NMMU take flight at USSA Championship

Luke Jerling-CropPORT ELIZABETH, 5 July 2016 – Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s A-team made the most of their home course advantage to soar to victory in the 36-hole stroke play seeding qualifier at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championship on Tuesday.

Luke Jerling, Colin Baldie, Jacues Smith and Michael Mayberry combined for rounds of 221 and 218 at the Humewood Links to top the standings at 439.

The local favourites finished 11 shots clear of Varsity College A and 12 strokes ahead of the University of Pretoria’s A-Team. Continue reading

Samu fights for Gauteng North Champs win

IvannaSamu_winTSHWANE, 4 July 2016 – Gauteng junior Ivanna Samu had to dig deep on the back nine at Woodhill Golf Estate and the country’s number two ranked player showed some serious grit to win the Liberty Gauteng North Championship on Monday.

Samu collected her fifth title this season when she edged out Casandra Hall from Ekurhuleni by one shot on seven-over-par 223 with rounds of 76, 70 and 77.

Newly-minted Nomads SA Girls Championship winner Danielle du Toit from Gauteng North took third on 228, while fellow Gauteng North player Larissa du Preez and Cara Gorlei from Western Province shared fourth on 230. Continue reading

NMMU show their teeth at USSA Champs

2016SSAAM_ClaytonMansfield_cropPORT ELIZABETH, 4 July 2016 – Luke Jerling led the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University A-team to joint first on day one of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championship at the Humewood Links in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

Jerling boosted NMMU A with a solid opening two-under-par 70. Michael Mayberry added a 73 and Jacques Smit and Colin Baldie supplemented their 221 total with a pair of 78s.

Not surprisingly, NMMU A share the top spot of the 36-hole stroke play qualifier with the defending champions, University of Pretoria. Continue reading
