Dream win for Du Preez at Gauteng Champs

LarissaJOHANNESBURG, 19 August 2016 – Gauteng North’s Larissa du Preez was absolutely delighted when she celebrated her first provincial success with an impressive four stroke victory in the ProShop Ladies Golf Gauteng 36-hole Stroke Play Championship this week.

The 20-year-old Gauteng North amateur was the only player to finish the first round in red numbers and a two-under-par 70 in the blustery weather at Parkview Golf Club saw her sleep on a three shot lead over Caitlyn Macnab from Ekurhuleni.

The conditions intensified in the final round, but once Du Preez overcame a nervy start, she showed some exceptional skills in the robust wind that bullied the field and battled to a hard-fought for 77 to triumph on three-over-par 147. Continue reading

How do you know that you are the best in the business? You win all the matches you play, in order to win the league in your province and then… beat everybody at the Northern Provinces finals.

Akasia Country Club represented the Gauteng North Golf Union, whilst Randpark Golf Club, Ebotse Links, Walker Park Golf Club and Potchefstroom Country Club each represented the other unions that make up the Northern Provinces. Limpopo did not field a team this year.

This event has a huge heritage and the trophy has been contested since shortly after the Second World War. The format is 8 member teams playing match play from scratch. Due to the number of teams the event is usually scheduled over 72 holes contested in two days. Because of the withdrawal of Limpopo the host union Ekurhuleni scheduled the matches over 54 holes. Thirty six holes contested on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday morning. Continue reading

Schaper made a dismal start in round one and was three over at the turn, but an eagle at the par five 12th gave him some momentum and he signed off with a 74. He began the final round four off the pace from first round pacesetter Bryce Leach. Continue reading
