Three way playoff to determine 2022 GNGU Open Champion

The 2022 GNGU was filled with excitement, drama, wet weather and unbelievable golf.

After round 1 Christiaan Burke set the pace, with a bogey free 63 (-9) we knew we were in for an exciting tournament.  Waterkloof home boy, Handré Truter, then followed Burke by also shooting a 63 in round 2, and went into the final 2 rounds 1 shot ahead of Burke, but with a tight pack behind him all chasing the trophy.  Handé kept his cool and went into the final round still 1 shot ahead.  But the final round was filled with birdie’s, eagles, bogeys and challenges and Casey Jarvis (69, 66, 68, 66), Kyle de Beer (72, 64, 68, 65) and Christiaan Burke (63, 71, 67, 68) all finished the tournament on 269 (-19) taking them into a three way playoff.  Casey’s consistency and cool proved his strength and he managed to take the trophy on the 2nd playoff hole.

Thank you must be extended to Waterkloof Golf Club’s staff, management and Committee for their hospitality and giving up the course for us to host a fantastic tournament.  The course was in exceptional condition and the Club went out of their way to ensure a successful tournament.

Mourning the loss of a true Daisy

It is with heartbreak that we heard of the news that Brigid Cheyne has passed away.
Brigid was an icon at Gauteng North Golf Union.  A friend, a mentor, a colleague and a mother figure to so many – she leaves a big void.
Her dedication, knowledge of and passion to GNGU is unsurpassed – the only person ever to have received Honourary Life Membership to the Union.  We have lost a true legend, but her contributions will not be forgotten.
Thank you Brigid for all that you were to so many of us.
Sincerest condolences are extended to her family and friends during this devastating time.
May she Rest in Peace.

Maas defends Silver Salver title

MAAS DEFENDS SILVER SALVER TITLE SUCCESSFULLY AT IRENE COUNTRY CLUB

Christiaan Maas from Pretoria Country Club became only the 4th player to defend the Silver Salver.  The other three players were H Baiocchi (1968 & 1969), G Schwartzel (1982 & 1983) and M Murless (1993 & 1994).

The 58th edition of the GNGU Silver Salver was played at Irene Country Club the home of Gauteng North Golf Union from the 8th to the 10th of October 2021.  In the first round on Friday we experienced a 45 min lightning delay.  This however didn’t stop Jordan Duminy who carded a fantastic opening round of 65, 7 under par.

Jordan consolidated his lead by carding a 2 under par, 70 in round 2. The notable mover however was Christiaan Maas who carded a 6 under par, 66 to move him into tied second place along with Samuel Simpson and Crismar Engelbrecht.

On Sunday however Maas showed his class by carding scores of 66 and 70 to win the Silver Salver by 272 (-16), 7 shots ahead of nearest contender Samuel Simpson.

We would like to thank Irene Country Club’s members, management and staff for affording us the opportunity to host this prestigious event at your world class facility.
