Mpumalanga Senior Open Champ

Mellette Hendrikse wins again.

Mellette Hendrikse reaffirmed his position as the number one senior amateur player in the country by winning the Mpumalanga Senior Open held at Graceland Golf Club.

Blustery conditions and a change in golf clubs saw the number one player in the country shoot a reckless 79 on day one of the tournament. “At one point I just felt like going home” Mellette was heard saying afterwards. He however pulled himself together like a true professional (in a manner of speaking) put his old clubs back in the bag and fired a 68 on a wind-swept Graceland Golf Club to win the open by three shots.

He played the last 3 holes level by means of single putts. A testament to true grit and a never say die attitude.

Mellette’s year in review:

January

Wins the GNGU senior open

February

4th in The Players Championship

11th in the Central Gauteng senior open

7th in the Cape Winelands senior open

May

Wins the Vaal senior open

August

Wins the Mpumalanga senior open

Champion of Champions (Men)

The Champion of Champions Tournament was held at Blue Valley Golf and Country Estate on 20 July 2014.

Competing in the Tournament  were the 2014 Champions in the following Divisions of the clubs in the Gauteng North Golf Union:

  • A Division (Club Champion)
  • B Division
  • C Division
  • Seniors

The A Division finished in a tie on 144 after 36 holes of Medal Stroke Play, between Alistair Bredenkamp (Blue Valley Golf and Country Estate), with rounds of 72 and 72,  and Reinhardt Blaauw (Centurion CC) with rounds of 74 and 70. After 2 holes of play-off had failed to render a Champion, and with no daylight left, it was decided to jointly award the trophy to them for the first time in its history.

Illustrious names have captured this title in the past, including current stars like George Coetzee, Richard Sterne and Darren Fichardt. Hopefully this bodes well for the golfing careers of these two aspiring young golfers.

Akasia crowned Northern Provinces Champs

Akasia Country Club has been crowned Northern Provinces League Finals champions for the second time in three years.

After narrowly edging out Wingate Park Country Club in the Scratch League finals by half a point in the home and away fixtures they took this momentum to face the other champions of the Northern Provinces. The cup was contested 12 and 13 July, hosted by the Central Gauteng Golf Union at Modderfontein Golf Club.

Akasia have been crowned the Gauteng North Golf Union scratch league champions for the past 3 consecutive years each time meeting Wingate Park Country Club in the finals. During 2012 the Gauteng North Golf Union hosted the event at Akasia Country Club where Akasia won the tournament. The 2013 edition was hosted by the Limpopo Golf Union at Potgietersrus Golf Club. Potchefstroom Country Club beat Akasia in a fiercely contested event by half a point. This year Akasia revenged their narrow defeat by not losing any of their matches.

The Northern Provinces Cup originated in 1948. It was contested between the Golf Associations who were then part of the Transvaal Golf Union. After the split of Transvaal into separate provinces the Cup is still contested to this day by the current Northern Unions (Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Ekurhuleni, North West, Central Gauteng, Gauteng North).

Naidoo takes charge at Nomads SA Boys U-17

POLOKWANE (1 July 2014) – Dylan Naidoo from Central Gauteng overtook first round pacesetter, Luca Filippi, and charged into the halfway lead at the Nomads SA Boys Under-17 Stroke Play Championship at Polokwane Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Modderfontein golfer hit the front with successive rounds of 71 to move one stroke clear of Filippi on a 36-hole total of two-under-par 142.

Filippi from Western Province kept in touch with a 74, and finished one shot ahead of the group at even-par, including fellow Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member, Anuerin Gounden (70), Juan-Pierre Cooper (70), Zimbabwe’s Kieren Vincent (74) and reigning Nomads SA Boys Under-15 champion, Herman Loubser from Boland, who also carded a 74.

However, the frontrunners will do well to keep an eye on defending champion, Jovan Rebula.

The country’s number one ranked junior turned in two over and double-bogeyed the par-four first, but birdies at the second, sixth and seventh saw the Southern Cape golfer narrow the gap to three shots after signing for a one-over-par 73.

Naidoo got off to a solid birdie-birdie start, but dropped shots at third and fifth holes. He rallied with six consecutive pars, knocked in a birdie putt at the par-five 12th and drained half-a-dozen more par putts to set the unchallenged club house target.

The 16-year-old carried some good form into the event.

He helped Central Gauteng to victory in the Challenge Cup Teams Tournament at Cullinan Golf Club in May and contributed to TuksSport High School’s second victory in the SA High School Championship towards the end of June.

Filippi had birdies at the 10th and second, but four bogeys cost him the overnight lead.

Meanwhile Gounden dropped just a single shot against three birdies in his second trip at the popular former Sunshine Tour venue.
