Business Connexion makes a telling golf development contribution

Business Connexion held their golf day on the 23rd of September at Irene Country Club. The sponsors of the day treated all the entrants to a free golf bag. In return the organisers asked that the players donate their old bags to the Gauteng North Golf Union. The GNGU then nominated the SAGDB to take acceptance of the goods in the on-going relationship between the two golfing bodies in the Gauteng North region. The players however also brought along other golfing items and donated these to the SAGDB.

Among the 70 odd golf bags were some 10 full sets of clubs, three junior sets, various drivers, putters, wedges, hybrids, bags, shoes, clothes, umbrellas and may more golf goodies. Mr Stephan van der Watt, who is the head coach for the SAGDB in Gauteng Central, GNGU and Mpumalanga accepted the donation on behalf of the SAGDB.

The GNGU and the SAGDB would like to take this opportunity to thank Business Connexion, the participants of the golf day and specifically Mr Louis Jonck for their invaluable support to golf development in our region.

Blue Valley members donate goods

The members of Blue Valley Golf and Country Club have donated golfing goods to the SAGDB. Donations were collected from members and amounted to a number of different goods collected and distributed to the kids under the auspices of the SAGDB.

Various golf bags, a number of clubs, shoes, hats, clothing, holdalls (including a brand new Nike bag), golf carts and a number of other goodies were donated. Everything collected has been distributed and put to good use.

Thank you Blue Valley members for your kind gesture.

One, two combo! Mellette does it again.

Mellette Hendrikse has won the KZN Senior Open. The Kwazulu Natal swing included two tournaments scheduled between the 4th and 8th of September.

The first was the KZN Senior Spring Classic hosted by the spectacular Durban Country Club. Mellette was relegated to second place by the eventual winner Morgan Phillips, a Maritzburg Golf Club resident, in what was loosely termed “testing” conditions.

The second tournament, the KZN Senior Open was hosted by Cotswold Downs Golf Club. Mellette was able to exact a swift revenge by beating Morgan Phillips, Kevin Curren and Rahme Ramon by two strokes.

He has improved his season’s record to 9 tournaments, 7 top 10 finishes and 4 wins. His ranking points with the SAGA is 81.72 with his nearest competitor on 66.50.

Jason Smith in Eisenhower Trophy team

Jason Smith has been selected to represent South Africa in Japan during the World Amateur Team Championships. The Championships are contested every second year and this year’s edition is scheduled between 9 – 14 September. The three member team is completed by Gauteng North’s Zander Lombard and Gerlou Roux who hails from the Western Province.

Smith has had a sterling year on the domestic amateur tournament scene. He made top 10 finishes in two match-play tournaments (KZN and WP). He had 6 top 10 finishes in stroke play tournaments of which 5 were top 5 finishes. He also won the South African Stroke Play championship on route to becoming the number 4 ranked amateur in the country.

This will mark the third occasion this season that he wil represent South Africa as an amateur golfer.

We wish him and the rest of the team the best of luck.

Continued support from PWC

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) has continued its sponsorship support of the Gauteng North Golf Union (GNGU). The relationship between PWC and the GNGU has been growing from strength to strength for a number of years.

PWC makes a significant contribution towards the annual Silver Salver tournament hosted by the GNGU. This is an invitation only tournament in which the GNGU invites the best of the best to compete for this prestigious title. Some of the previous winners include names like Hugh Baiocchi, John Fourie, Andries Oosthuizen, Gavin Levenson, Andre Kruse, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Louis Oosthuizen and most recently our own Zander Lombard.

PWC is also a proud sponsor of our Premier Inter-provincial Team. This team won the title during the 2013 edition for the first time in 29 years. We have selected a very strong side this year and know that the players will do us proud.

We want to take this opportunity to thank PWC for its continued support and in particular Mr. James du Preez.
