Van der Knaap makes a move in PE

274AndrewVanDerKnaap1_GNGUPORT ELIZABETH, 5 February 2015 – TuksSport Golf Academy player Andrew van der Knaap braved a robust Westerly wind to vault into the top 10 in Thursday’s third round of the South African Stroke Play Championship at Port Elizabeth Golf Club.

The 21-year-old Centurion golfer was well off the pace after an opening 70 and second round 74, but dipped five strokes below to finish on five-under-par 211.

Van der Knaap lags seven strokes off the pace and shares eighth spot with Frenchman Jeong Weon Ko, Central Gauteng’s Darin de Smidt and Dylan Naidoo, Luke Trocado from Western Province and Boland’s Johan Germishuys. Continue reading

GN pair stay in touch at SA Stroke Play

303RosswellSinclair_GNGUPORT ELIZABETH, 4 February 2015 – South Africans Luke Trocado and Rupert Kaminsky powered their way past overnight leader Ewen Ferguson from Scotland, while Rosswell Sinclair and Ruan Conradie lead the way for Gauteng North after two rounds at the South African Stroke Play Championship.

Trocado from Western Province clocked in with a five-under-par 67, while Kaminski from Parkview closed with a flawless 66 to claim a share of pole position at nine-under-par 135.

The pair finished a stroke clear of Ferguson and two ahead of Frenchman Ugo Coussard after both foreigners signed for 71s.

Sinclair followed an opening 70 with an even-par 72 to tie at two under alongside Wingate Park’s Conradie, who signed for successive 71s. Continue reading

Gauteng stars look to impress in PE

317HendrikusStoop1GNGUPORT ELIZABETH, 4 February 2015 – Three of Gauteng North’s top amateurs will be looking to impress in this week’s South African Stroke Play Championship at Port Elizabeth Golf Club after receiving the nod for the annual Leopard Trophy later this month.

The South African Golf Association (SAGA) selected the Jason Smith, Hendrikus Stoop and Teaghan Gauche to the eight-man team that will battle a top Scottish side from 18-19 February.

The trio will join the country’s number one ranked Tristen Strydom from Ekurhuleni, Western Province’s Gerlou Roux, Matthew Spacey from Central Gauteng and Ekurhuleni pair Stefan Cronje  and Paul Boshoff in the two-day Test at the magnificent Leopard Creek near the Kruger National Park. Centurion pair set GN pace at SA Stroke Play

IPT GOLF CHALLENGEPORT ELIZABETH. 3 February 2015 – Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson put on a master class from tee to green to blaze his way into the first round lead in the South African Stroke Play Championship while Centurion pair Rosswell Sinclair and Andrew van der Knaap set the pace for the Gauteng North contingent at Port Elizabeth Golf Club on Tuesday.

Ferguson took advantage of the near-perfect conditions to conjure up a flawless seven-under-par 65 to finish atop a logjam leaderboard with a distinctly international flavour.

The 18-year-old Glaswegian leads by one from Ugo Coussaud of France and edged two strokes clear of 16-year-old Modderfontein junior Eric Wowor, who chipped in for a pair of eagles on his way to a share of third with Frenchman Jeremy Gandon on 67. Continue reading

Smith bidding for home glory at SA Amateur Stroke Play

2015SAOP_JasonSmithTreesGNGUPORT ELIZABETH. 2 February 2015 – South Africa’s top amateurs are set to face some strong international opposition in this year’s South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship, which tees off at Port Elizabeth Golf Club from 3-6 February.

Defending champion Jason Smith will spearhead the local challenge against 31 players from Ireland, Scotland, France, England, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

The last international winner of the championship was Englishman Gary Wolstenholme, who triumphed at George Golf Club in 2002. Smith believes the large international delegation will attempt to change the course of history. Continue reading

Strong showing from Gauteng North in PE

2014SASP_JasonSmith_Rnd2_GNGUPORT ELIZABETH, 2 February 2015 – Western Province amateur Ian Snyman lifted the Eastern Province/Border Stroke Play title, while Gauteng North’s top amateurs enjoyed a strong showing at Port Elizabeth Golf Club ahead of the SA Stroke Play this week.

Snyman defeated reigning Carrick Neil Scottish Open champion Gavin Moynihan with a perfectly timed flop-shot to end a dramatic four-hole play-off after both players tied on 10-under-par 206 in regulation play.
