Determined Du Toit takes Ackerman Championship

CAPE TOWN, 11 October 2015: Scenes from the The Ackerman Championships 2015 prize giving - 05CAPE TOWN, 15 October 2015 – Gauteng North rising star Danielle du Toit added her name to a prestigious list of champions including Ivanna Samu, Nobuhle Dlamini from Swaziland and Cara Gorlei when she lifted the 35th Ackerman Championship title at the weekend.

The 16-year-old from Waterkloof produced a pair of birdies at the last three holes at Royal Cape Golf Club to seal a two stroke victory on one-over-par 222.

Du Toit opened with a five-over-par 79 and was well off the pace from first round leader Katia Schaff from Western Province, but an even par 74 in the second round boosted the Pretoria Country Club player within three shots of three-way tie at the top.

Boland’s Vicki Traut, Woo Ju Son from Gauteng and Brittney-Fay Berger all made bids for the title, but it was Du Toit who most successfully navigated the stiff breeze on Sunday afternoon. Continue reading

SA quartet rally in Spirit International finale

SATeam_GNGU15 October 2015 – Playing for pride, the South African team produced their best golf in the final round of the Spirit International at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Texas on Wednesday.

The country’s top ranked pair Ivanna Samu and Kaleigh Telfer fired a four under 68 to finish at three-under-par 213 in the Women’s Competition. Continue reading

SA chase Zimbabwe at AAGTC

SATeamPractice_GNGUNAIROBI, Kenya (14 October 2015) – South Africa’s title defence at the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship in jeopardy and the defending champions will have to chase down Zimbabwe to secure their eighth victory in the prestigious teams championship at Limuru Country Club.

The South African team combined for a 222 to finish on 664, but lost their joint overnight lead and will start the final round two strokes behind Zimbabwe. Continue reading

PORT ELIZABETH, 14 October 2015 – South Africa’s top ranked senior Mellette Hendrikse will be gunning for a third Indwe Risk Services SA Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship title at the magnificent Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth from 20-23 October.

Twelve months ago, the 55-year-old Gauteng North senior fired a clinical final round two-under-par 70 at Pecanwood to claim a five stroke victory over fellow Gauteng North golfer Chris Delport and three-time champion Jock Wellington.

The victory cemented his position at the top of the senior amateur rankings and he has remained unchallenged this season since a play-off victory Gauteng North Senior Open in January. Continue reading

SA hunting redemption in Kenya

 NAIROBI, Kenya (13 October 2015) – South Africa will be hunting a low total in the third round of the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championships (AAGTC) in Kenya after losing their overnight lead Limuru Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.

Kenya pulled level with overnight leaders and tournament favourites on a day of high drama for the local heroes after Gauteng North’s Jason Smith, who fired the low round of the day, was disqualified for the second round.

The South Africans began the day with a four shot lead over the host nation and Smith fired a three-under-par 69 to give the defending champions a huge lift. Continue reading

Heartbreak for SA team in USA

2015SI_Crop_TeaghanMatt_GNGU14 October 2015 – The South African team made a very sombre start in the second round of the Spirit International at Whispering Pines Golf Club in in Texas on Tuesday after their disqualification from the Team Competition.

Teaghan Gauche and Matthew Spacey were disqualified from the Men’s Competition after submitting an incorrect scorecard in the first round, and although top ranked pair Ivanna Samu and Kaleigh Telfer remain in the Women’s Competition for the duration of the championship, the disqualification ended South Africa’s title bid for this year.

“Teaghan and Matthew signed for a 71 in the first round, having collectively made six birdies and five bogeys,” explained Womens Golf South Africa president Karen Olivant. Continue reading

SA team off to struggling start in USA

SATeam_GNGU13 October 2015 – The South African team will need to dig deep in Tuesday’s second round after the quartet made a cool start in smouldering hot weather conditions in the Spirit International at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Texas.

Teaghan Gauche from Gauteng North and Central Gauteng’s Matthew Spacey tied for 17th in the Mens Competition, while Gauteng pair Ivanna Samu and Kaleigh Telfer joined Australia in last place in the Women’s Competition.
