SA pack launch St Andrews assault

Smith leads strong SA attack at St Andrews

JasonSmith1_GNGUST ANDREWS, Scotland (2 June 2016) – Former SA Stroke Play champion Jason Smith will lead a nine-strong South African pack against a vast group of international challengers in the prestigious St Andrews Links Trophy.

The 72-hole championship tees off at the Home of Golf’s New Course on Friday, with action switching to the famous Old Course for the second round on Saturday.

Based on the strength of the field, the St Andrews Links Trophy is ranked one of the strongest amateur tournaments in the world, and it is arguably one of the strongest championships outside the Amateur Championship in the British Isles. Continue reading

Rebula leads SA onslaught in Scotland

Fellow RSA National Squad members Albert Venter, Tristen Strydom, Jason Smith, Aubrey Beckley, Andre Nel, James du Preez and Kyle McClatchie star alongside the George golfer, while Terence Coutinho, Noel Anderson and Tom Watson complete the local challenge at the renowned links of Moray. Gauteng powers to 72-Hole Teams double

GautengA_GNGUMIDDELBURG, 25 May 2016 – Ivanna Samu, Kaleigh Telfer and Woo-Ju Son lived up to their star billing when they sealed back-to-back success for Gauteng in the Swiss Team Trophy, while Ekurhuleni lifted the Challenge Trophy with a crushing victory at the 72-Hole Teams Championship on Wednesday.

It was Kajal Mistry (70) and Chiara Contomathios (73) from the B-team that got Gauteng’s title defence underway at Middelburg Country Club on Monday, while the country’s top ranked seniors Samu and Telfer from Gauteng A opened with 149 to finish six shots off the pace.

But Samu and number one ranked junior Son stepped it up in round two with a total of 145 to grab a share of the lead at 294 with Gauteng North A. Continue reading

Gauteng North A with work to do at 72-Hole Teams Champs

LADIES GOLFMIDDELBURG, 24 May 2016 – Gauteng’s A-team produced two solid performances to open up a comfortable gap on Gauteng North A in the 72-Hole Teams Championship at Middelburg Country Club on Tuesday.

The B-Team established a three stroke lead in the first round to set the tone for Gauteng, but as they faded on day two, the A-Team picked up the slack to keep Gauteng’s title defence in the Swiss Team Trophy division on track. Continue reading

Gauteng North A in pursuit in Middelburg

GautengNorthA_GNGUGauteng North A is in pursuit of Gauteng B, who made a fast start to their title defence in the 72-Hole Teams Championship at Middelburg Country Club on Monday.

Surprisingly it was the B-team who pushed the 2015 champions in early pole position in the Swiss Team Trophy division. Randpark’s Kajal Mistry offset a lone bogey at the par three sixth with birdies at three, 15 and 16 to open with a two under 70. Chiara Contomathios from Wanderers mixed three bogeys with a pair of birdies for a 73 that handed Gauteng B pole position at one-under-par 143.

Gauteng North A finished three off the pace , while Boland leapfrogged Gauteng A to join the chase in third spot. Continue reading

Daisies edge Gauteng for Challenge Cup victory

GautengNorth1_GNGUJOHANNESBURG (20 May 2016) – In 2014, the difference come down to one point and the Challenge Cup went the way of Central Gauteng. Last year, the SAGA Juniors did it with a single games point. Not surprisingly then, the 2016 edition produced another final round of high drama.

But no-one imagined that Gauteng North would celebrate their first victory in five years with the smallest margin ever.

The Daisies fought like Trojans until the last putt dropped to defeat the President’s Team 6.5 – 5.5 and that narrow triumph secured the half a games point Gauteng North needed to edge out Central Gauteng for victory at Parkview Golf Club on Friday. Continue reading
