Samu fights for Gauteng North Champs win

IvannaSamu_winTSHWANE, 4 July 2016 – Gauteng junior Ivanna Samu had to dig deep on the back nine at Woodhill Golf Estate and the country’s number two ranked player showed some serious grit to win the Liberty Gauteng North Championship on Monday.

Samu collected her fifth title this season when she edged out Casandra Hall from Ekurhuleni by one shot on seven-over-par 223 with rounds of 76, 70 and 77.

Newly-minted Nomads SA Girls Championship winner Danielle du Toit from Gauteng North took third on 228, while fellow Gauteng North player Larissa du Preez and Cara Gorlei from Western Province shared fourth on 230. Continue reading

NMMU show their teeth at USSA Champs

2016SSAAM_ClaytonMansfield_cropPORT ELIZABETH, 4 July 2016 – Luke Jerling led the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University A-team to joint first on day one of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championship at the Humewood Links in Port Elizabeth on Monday.

Jerling boosted NMMU A with a solid opening two-under-par 70. Michael Mayberry added a 73 and Jacques Smit and Colin Baldie supplemented their 221 total with a pair of 78s.

Not surprisingly, NMMU A share the top spot of the 36-hole stroke play qualifier with the defending champions, University of Pretoria. Continue reading

Samu shows form at Woodhill

collageTSHWANE, 4 July 2016 – South Africa’s number two ranked Ivanna Samu will take a comfortable lead into today’s final round of the Liberty Gauteng North Ladies Open, having pulled five shots clear at Woodhill Country Club on Sunday.

The 17-year-old Ruimsig golfer opened with a four over 76 to lag one shot behind recent Nomads SA Girls Championship winner Danielle du Toit from Gauteng North and Ekurhuleni’s Casandra Hall, but she produced the only sub-par round in round two to pull away from the opposition.

Samu encircled a bogey at the par four sixth with a pair of birdies and reeled in further gains at 14 and 17 to counter a bogey at the closing hole for two under 70. Continue reading

Du Toit drives to victory at SA Girls

Danielle and VicHallORKNEY, 28 June 2016 – Gauteng North junior Danielle du Toit gave credence to the old adage “when at first you don’t succeed, try and try again” when she seized a runaway victory in the Nomads SA Girls Championship at Orkney Golf Club on Tuesday.

In 2014, Ivanna Samu lost the prestigious title in a three-way play-off to Cara Gorlei. A year later, Samu returned and defeated Du Toit at the third extra hole to claim a play-off victory. Du Toit continued the runner-up to champion trend at this year’s championship with an impressive nine stroke victory over Samu.

“I am thrilled to bits over this win and the way that I won,” gushed the delighted Du Toit. “I gained a lot of experience playing in the Junior Golf World Cup in Japan and I felt a lot more confident coming to Orkney this year. Continue reading

Du Toit keeps charge at SA Girls

Son & du Toit & Samu_ CropORKNEY, 27 June 2016 – Gauteng North junior Danielle du Toit maintained her grip on the Nomads SA Girls Championship with as the country’s top ranked junior Woo-Jo Son stepped up her pursuit in Monday’s second round at Orkney Golf Club.

Du Toit overcame a mid-round stumble to return an even-par 72 and will sleep on a five shot lead over Son, who returned a one under 71 to finish at 144. Continue reading

SA seven impress in Europe

2016TeamSA_Emile_Andre_Rupert_Jerling27 June 2016 – The South African Universities team took fourth in the World Universities Golf Championship in France, South Africa’s top ranked Jovan Rebula led the SA pack at the Brabazon Trophy in England and Southern Cape junior Caylum Boon made a great recovery to finish 33rd in Switzerland on Sunday.

South African students Rupert Kaminski, Andrew van der Knaap and Luke Jerling produced rounds of 151, 152, 149 and 149 to secure fourth on 601, while France beat Ireland by six strokes to record a popular home victory in the World Universities Golf Championship at Golf de Planchetorte in Brive-la-Gaillarde.

Du Toit powers into Nomads SA Girls lead

2016TJGWC_DanielleduToit_cropTwelve months after she lost the Nomads SA Girls Championship title to Ivanna Samu in a three hole play-off, Gauteng North teenager Danielle du Toit basked in glory on the opening day of the prestigious junior event at Orkney Golf Club.

Fresh from testing herself against the cream in junior golf at the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan, the 17-year-old Pretoria Country Club player fired a sublime five-under-par 67 to open up a huge lead on the chasing pack. Continue reading
