ORKNEY, 27 June 2016 – Gauteng North junior Danielle du Toit maintained her grip on the Nomads SA Girls Championship with as the country’s top ranked junior Woo-Jo Son stepped up her pursuit in Monday’s second round at Orkney Golf Club.

Du Toit overcame a mid-round stumble to return an even-par 72 and will sleep on a five shot lead over Son, who returned a one under 71 to finish at 144.

The overnight leader powered to the top spot with an opening 67 and began the day with a six shot lead. She completed the front nine in one under after picking up a birdie at the par four sixth, but dropped three shots after the turn with a double bogey at 10 and bogey at 11. The 17-year-old from Pretoria Country Club immediately overturned some of the damage with a birdie at 12 and a final gain at 17.to sign for an even-par 72.

Fifteen-year-old Son from Eagle Canyon, already a four-time winner this season, offset losses at five, six, 13 and 14 with birdies at two, four, 10, 17 and 18.

Defending champion Ivanna Samu, who beat Du Toit at the third hole of a play-off for the title last year, moved into sole third at two over. Fellow Gauteng golfer Chiara Contomathios sits in fourth at five over after carding a 76 and is one stroke clear of the three-way tie for seventh that features Freestater Chante van Zyl (73), Kajal Mistry from Gauteng (76) and Ekurhuleni’s Casandra Hall (75).

Crystal Beukes from Boland and Chante de Lange from Eastern Province rounded out the top 10 at nine over after both players registered 76.

Meanwhile Kaitlin Fensham from Klerksdorp overhauled overnight leader Holly Lau for the B-Division lead. The North West junior followed an opening 88 with an 81 to take pole position on 25 over. Amore Steyn from Boland returned an 89 to move into second at 29 over, while Lau from Woodhill Country Club slipped to third on 30 over after posting an 89.

The C-Division for handicaps 19-25 and D-Division for handicaps 26-32 also kicked off on Monday.

Gauteng’s Tebogo Lefifi from posted 38 points to take a three point lead in the C-Division over Simone Ferreira from KwaZulu-Natal, while Ashleigh Mckie posted 43 to take the top spot in the D-Division. Mckie finished two points ahead of fellow Western Province golfer Asheeqa Bisoonpersan.
