GAUTENG NORTH TAKE ALL THE SILVER AT PICK N PAY INTER-PROVINCIAL

Our team!

It all went according to plan for Gauteng North at the Pick n Pay Women’s Inter-Provincial played this week on Woodmead course at Country Club Johannesburg.  They took home both the A and the B Inter-Prov silver.  An elated Dot van Ryneveld heaped praise on her players who proved, once again, that the awesome talent in this Union has some serious depth to it.  New Union Ekurhuleni never stood a chance against the experienced Gauteng North A team who have now added a sixth consecutive win to their record.

Gauteng A narrowly beat Western Province A (5 / 4) on the final day, to pip the visitors who had to settle for 3rd place in Section 1.  A nail-biting finish was produced by Western Province Captain, Vanessa Smith playing against top junior Lara Weinstein who took the honours 1 up.  This resulted in the singles matches being halved.

In Section 2 of the A Inter-Provincial, Boland produced magic golf this week winning this section.  Today’s determination to beat Southern Cape made this possible, and a 2/1 lead in the morning foursomes gave them a kick start.  The one highlight for the Southern Cape team was Maggie du Toit’s hole in one on the par 3 13th, recording her first ace.  The other two games in this division were fairly contested between KwaZulu Natal and North West, with KwaZulu Natal coming out on top.

Gauteng North B showed their big sisters that they could also produce the goods by finishing in top position in the B Inter-Provincial.  They will now have the option of taking promotion to the A Inter-Provincial.  Their game against Mpumalanga today was a one-sided affair.   The Gauteng B team ended the tournament on a high beating Eastern Cape 5 / 1.

Section 2 of the B Inter-Provincial had the potential of being very exciting with only one point separating Western Province B and Free State & Northern Cape.  The foursomes were tightly contested, although Province took both matches.  With two of the singles matches ending all square, Sammy Barber’s easy win clinched the victory for Western Province.  Border and Limpopo took one game each in the morning foursomes, but Border claimed three of the four singles to avoid finishing bottom in this section.
